A very important component of preparedness is fuel. Consider the possibility of all stores and fuel outlets being cut off immediately... how would that effect your situation? Have you given much thought to this critical component? Whether it be short term or long term emergency situations, for both surviving and also the normal day-to-day necessities, are you prepared?
Without fuel, how well would the following work?
- Oil lantern
- Kerosene cooker
- Kerosene heater
- Propane stoves
- Propane refrigerator
- Lawnmowers & Weed-eaters
It's an obvious question with an obvious answer. Without fuel, they simply don't work. So to be prepared, the answer is to store fuel for the components, right?
Some fuels like kerosene and propane are much easier to store than others. Given the right storage container, environment, etc. they can store easily for longer periods of time without much effort. However, gasoline is a completely different challenge.
According to the American Petroleum Institute, gasoline will last, at most, two years. They recommend avoiding storage from season to season. However it can last a lot longer than that with the proper treatment. And I have recently come across and tried out a great option.
I was able to try out some PRI-G Complete Gasoline Treatment (made for E-10 & all gasoline grades, 2 & 4 stroke engines). And this is the purpose of this product review. A close friend of mine tried out the PRI-D Complete Diesel Treatment and had the same opinion as mine afterwards. So although I'll be reviewing the PRI-G specifically, the Diesel version (PRI-D) can be included.
The PRI-G, by Power Research Inc, is a concentrated fuel treatment that markets the following benefits:
- Engines perform better and last longer
- Engine power increased and fuel economy realized
- Fuel system and engine deposits prevented
- Phase separation inhibited for E-10
- Fuel stays fresh and ready for use
- Degraded fuel is restored to freshness
- Hesitation, knocking and pinging reduced
The treatment ratio is as follows (according to their bottle size options):
- 16 oz treats 256 gallons
- 32 oz treats 512 gallons
- 1 gallon treats 2,000 gallons
The concentrated ratio is 1:2,000 which results in great cost effective use.
So I tried out the additive in my 98 Chevy truck with over 185,000 miles on it. This truck is on it's last leg and just about ready to die. I was actually pretty excited to see how this stuff worked in this engine. So I used the recommended ratio and watched for results, going through many tanks of gas before writing this review.
The first thing I noticed was just a very subtle difference in the way things ran. It seemed to just run smoother. The sputtering that was common reduced significantly. Even just starting the vehicle seemed smoother. And because I have an issue in the engine that requires me to change a couple spark plugs every 3,000 miles or so, I wanted to go a little longer after using this additive. Normally, the sputtering would increase at that timeframe. However, I went past that timeframe and no sputtering occurred. So obviously something positive was occurring.
Overall there was a noticeable, positive difference. Things just obviously ran smoother and power seemed to increase slightly. It just seemed like every aspect was fine tuned slightly. I didn't check the fuel mileage, because the engine issues always had my mpg all over the place. However, it is pretty safe to assume it was improved due to the overall better performance of the engine. I found I was filling up less often than before (which I paid close attention to because I was always waiting to add more for this review). And the pinging that would occur periodically was eliminated. So I am very pleased with the difference.
I also added it to my wife's vehicle, although the results on that cannot be recorded due to obvious reasons... However, after researching the product and my own experience, I'm convinced using this product will prolong the engine and combustion components, improve gas mileage and save me money in the long run.
But using this in your vehicle isn't the main reason for this review. The most important part, in my opinion, is the ability to store and preserve the integrity of fuel for longer periods of time. From a preparedness viewpoint, proper, safe fuel storage is critical. And this additive, when added annually, can prolong the life of your fuel for years and years, and potentially indefinitely! They say that it is estimated that more than half of generator failures are due to bad fuel. If you have a generator or other gas operated machine where the fuel in the tank may sit a year or two at a time, you can add the recommended amount straight to the tank annually to ensure that when the time comes to start the engine, the fuel will be fresh and ready to use. And if you find some older gasoline that is lower on the quality scale, adding some of this stuff will give it a quality boost so it can be utilized and not wasted!
This treatment also allows you to stock up on gasoline when the prices are right. Since the price fluctuates depending on the time of year, you are able to buy when the price is right and treat it accordingly.
Another important thing is that this isn't altering the fuel, but instead enhances the thermal stability chemistry within the fuel. Because of this, it doesn't void most all warranties. So it can be used in most any types of machinery.
Overall, I was extremely pleased with the performance and will definitely be adding a few bottles to my preps. I honestly can't recommend it enough. It is a great product that everyone should use and is a must-have in long-term preps. In fact, although I don't sell it now, I liked it so much that I am looking into possibly offering it in my store. So check it out and see if this is something that can benefit you!
**And remember, it is important to follow all local laws and regulations in fuel storage and use.
Enjoy the journey!
Note: I would also like to thank the company for sending me some samples to try out for myself and allowing me to share my experience with others.
